August 29, 2010 --perseverance

Sometimes, that which we desire most remains tantalizingly just out of reach. Your search brings you almost there. Your ability to grasp what you want falls just a little bit short. So close. So very, very close… you picture yourself holding it, tasting it, smelling it. All of your senses are on high alert to receive the treasure you seek.
And each time you reach for it, each time you think you’ve found it… it slips away. Your excitement had reached fever intensity, only to be disappointed. You feel yourself practically crash with the loss of something you never actually had. You picture yourself with your heart’s desire… it seems so real! And then you look around, and you see that you have not attained your prize.
So as a member of the human race, you pick yourself up, and begin your search again. And again. And again. And each time you reach out, farther and farther for that which you value, it slips away again and again. You feel like a failure each and every time.

But here’s the truth. You are only a failure if you give up. If you persevere, if you are resolute in your course of action, you are still in the game. You still have the chance to acquire what you yearn for deep in your heart.

Perseverance … yes, I believe this: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish it’s work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking in anything.” – James 1:2-4 (NIV)
