October 28, 2010 -- Shirley Mae

October 28, 2010. 6:47pm PST. ISO 100. Shutter 1.3. Aperture f/8.0. Manual exposure, no flash.

Shirley Mae Castle Bode and her sister Vivian (and brother George) lived with their mother – ‘Mother B.’ in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Mother B. had a succession of different husbands… 3 in all? This may seem unusual for the times – 1920’s, in the high-society of a small town. George eventually went off to a military boarding school in the southwest. Shirley Mae and Vivian, rather than attending a normal high school or college, were sent off to a finishing school in Boston.
At the finishing school, Shirley Mae and Vivian studied music, dancing, equestrianism, and art. Shirley Mae excelled at art. She was a very creative person and had her own distinctive sense of style.
Shirley enjoyed everything artistic, whether it was flower arranging, or creating a picturesque meal. She visited many museums, collected everything, enjoyed traveling, and was infamous for stating ‘dust is a warm color’… Shirley left her sense of style all around her, painting, gilding, beading, cutting, or decorating furniture, clothing, and accessories. This mirror is of a pair that she had added decorations to.
Sometimes I swear I can catch a fleeting glimpse of her.
Shirley Mae.
My grandmother.

  1. The artistic drive can not, *will not* be stifled.
