the love letter

July 7, 2011

Like so much trash
thrown out at the side of the road.
An instant decision.
Crumpled up and tossed to the wind.

The delicate paper
fluttering. Slipping in the breeze
due to motion from passers-by.
Their eyes averted from someone’s discard.

It settles with a sigh
only to be swept up in the draft
of the unseeing, uncaring.
Intent on their own purposes.

The colors on the paper subtle, the words sweet.
Picked up, only to be dropped
carelessly again.
For the lure of the gilt and new.

Fading and wilted,
Pushed into a dustpan.
Lost forever.
